While the world was at war resources of every kind were being put towards the national war efforts. Governments ask their citizens to help in every way they could by making sacrifices and cutting back on certain things. One of the things that were scarce was food and while citizens participated in food rationing programs the government also encouraged self-reliance with ‘Victory Gardens’.

Victory Gardens came in every shape and size. People both in city and rural areas a like planted victory gardens to raise food for their families, friends, and neighbors. Most of the food that was produced was canned and saved for the winter. About 20 million Americans planted victory gardens, these gardens produced up to 40% of all that was consumed by the American people.
